How Heavy Rain Can Cause Water Damage
Even without major flooding, several hours of steady or heavy rain can put your property at risk for water damage. Clogged gutters, overwhelmed drainage systems, roof leaks, basement seepage, and water entering through windows or other vulnerable areas can quickly become bigger problems.
Before the storm arrives:
- Clean out gutters and make sure downspouts are directing water away from your foundation
- Check your roof for visible damage or areas where water could enter
- Make sure basement drains and sump pumps are working properly
- Move valuables away from basement floors and other areas prone to leaks
- Secure outdoor items that could be moved or damaged by strong winds
- If you notice a leak during the storm, safely contain the water if possible
- Prepare for possible extended power outages
What to Do If Your Property Takes on Water
If heavy rain causes a leak, flooding, or other storm-related water damage, act quickly. Standing water can continue spreading through flooring, walls, and other materials, while prolonged moisture can create conditions for mold growth.
